What is Pastel?

The landscapes we encounter while traveling hold an air and fragrance that photographs cannot capture. Pastel requires no drying time and travels light, allowing color and light to be set down on paper right on the spot. The rich gradations and soft tones that emerge from a simple stroke of the finger hold the quiet poetry of a passing moment, just as it was.
Why I Paint Pastel

The beauty of a landscape encountered in travel disappears in an instant. I find that sketching with pastels imprints the smell and feel of a place more deeply than pressing a shutter ever could. It is a relationship with this medium built up through years of sketching at home and abroad — one that continues to this day. I also offer pastel painting workshops for children and older adults, and the smiles of participants are among my greatest joys.
